Terpenes

Terpene: any of a large group of volatile unsaturated hydrocarbons found in the essential oils of plants, especially conifers and citrus trees...in essence, flavor!

Home from your local dispensary, the tools of your favorite rolling ritual are set out before you with surgeon’s precision. You open the lid and are met with that divine aroma only cannabis can inspire. Sometimes the scent may have citrus notes, or enchant those wanting nostrils (yeah, we said it) with the vibrance of a pine forest. These variations of potent strain-specific scents are brought to you by terpenes.

While the conversation in the industry circles around terpenes in cannabis, terpenes themselves are found in many plants, including those we consume on a daily basis. As more consumers take cannabis into the kitchen, it’s important to note which strains you are using when cooking with cannabis. For example, if you are making a savory pasta dish where a garlic butter is present, you may not want to use a strain high in Linalool, as that will deliver notes of lavender. A more complementary pairing would be a strain rich in Limonene to accompany the garlic and butter combination.

With increasing legalization, more formal studies of terpenes and how they may recreationally and medicinally pertain to the cannabis user’s experience will become readily available. Until then, bon appétit!

Myrcene

Myrcene is the most abundant terpene found in modern cannabis. Not only does it promote calming effects, but it actually aids in your body’s absorption of THC - thus increasing the intensity, and shortening the time of onset.

Beta-Caryophyllene

Due to its interaction with the body’s endocannabinoid system, researchers believe that Beta-Caryophyllene is not only a common cannabis terpene, but also a cannabinoid! By interacting with CB2 receptors, it is found to quell anxiety and stress - making it great for social settings.
