LEUNE Lit Club: Historical Fiction

Welcome back to LEUNE Lit Club! This week we’re grabbing our time traveling bong and going back in time with some historical fiction. The books we’ve selected aren’t just for the history buffs; they're for anyone craving a captivating story with depth and meaning.

1. Circe by Madeline Miller
Madeline Miller's Circe is a literary time machine that transports us to Greek mythology. It's the story of Circe, the sorceress from The Odyssey but this time we hear her own unique narrative. This book explores the power of timeless storytelling while weaving feminist themes in this ancient mythological world.

2. Beloved by Toni Morrison
Toni Morrison's Beloved takes us to post-Civil War America, where we follow Sethe's quest for freedom and identity. Morrison's compelling narrative touches on themes like love, sacrifice, and the haunting weight of the past. Has Morrison's method of storytelling profoundly impacted your understanding of history the way it has with us?

3. The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen
The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen offers a fresh perspective on the Vietnam War. Our unnamed narrator, a double agent, and a communist sympathizer, takes us into the complex world of espionage and morality. Weigh themes of identity and loyalty, while the lines between good and evil are blurred through this gripping historical novel.

4. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
No historical fiction list would be complete without Jane Austen's classic Pride and Prejudice. Travel back to early 19th-century England, and join us in the company of the spirited Elizabeth Bennet as she defies societal norms and navigates the complexities of love. Austen explores themes of class, romance, and the timeless battle of pride and prejudice. (Or you could just watch the movie, our favorite is the 2005 version.)

Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply love a good story with substance, these books offer a rich tapestry of history and human experience. We're eager to discuss these narratives with you. Tag us @leunebrand if you read along!
