Cannabis joints have been around for centuries, however their exact origins are unknown. The word "joint" was first used in the United States in the 19th century, referring to a place where people could smoke marijuana, and by the 1930s, the word was also being used to refer to a marijuana cigarette (the phrase “marijuana cigarette” will never not be hilarious).

The first joints were probably made by rolling the leaves of the plant into a cylinder and then smoking. However, it wasn't until the invention of the rolling paper in the 19th century that joints became more easily accessible and widespread.
