A Heady Look at THC Metabolization
THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the primary psychoactive component of cannabis. That’s not news to most of us. When consumed, THC interacts with the endocannabinoid system in the body, producing a range of effects, including euphoria, relaxation, and altered perception. Again, not news. What many may not know is how the body metabolizes THC when ingested as opposed to smoked. To experience these benefits, the body metabolizes THC through a series of (rather complex) processes.
Absorption and Distribution of THC
When THC is ingested, it is absorbed through the digestive system and enters the bloodstream. The THC is then transported to the liver where it undergoes a process known as “first-pass metabolism.” During this process, the liver breaks down THC into several metabolites, including 11-OH-THC and THC-COOH. These metabolites are then released into the bloodstream and distributed throughout the body. It is at this point the onset of effects are felt.
Metabolism of THC
Metabolism is affected by a number of factors, including the route of administration, the amount of THC ingested, and the individual's metabolism. The bioavailability of THC is highest when inhaled, followed by oral ingestion and topical application (this does not mean the “high” will be stronger when smoked). The half-life of THC is also longer when ingested orally, ranging from 1 to 3 days in occasional users and up to 13 days in daily users.
The effects of THC can be felt within minutes of inhalation but can take up to 2 hours to feel the effects when ingested. The effects can last for several hours, again contingent on a myriad of factors.
Dosing
If you are new to cannabis, follow the golden rule when starting out: Start low (dosage) and go slow. Many unseasoned users will take an edible and become impatient when they don't feel anything, leading them to ingest more before the THC from the first dose has had ample time to metabolize.
